Our Growing Story

“What can we grow here?”

We’ve never stopped asking that question. The local Valley land where we grow today has been farmed for nearly a century. Our family has continued to grow quality plants and produce to enrich our community, for the past 54 years.

Owner Ben Degoede has been a part of the family business since he was a child, putting together store boxes for candy money. He now heads up the operation alongside his son Benjamin. “Big” Ben, as we sometimes call him, says his favorite part about growing has always been the seasons. He loves the process of change and seeing new things grow throughout the year.

Our destination garden shop, Windmill Gardens, originally got its name from a small metal roadside windmill that became a natural landmark for the store. Customers would simply say, “it’s by the windmill.”

Ben’s dad later acquired the now iconic windmill in Canada with the intention of preserving it as a permanent hallmark of the site. After waiting in the parking lot for nearly 15 years, he was finally able to add the windmill to the building. It has since presided over the Windmill Village and greeted thousands of visitors who have come to enjoy the grounds.

When our family first started growing, we specialized in tulips and seasonal flowers. Today, our Farm includes over 5 acres of greenhouses.

We grow everything from herbs and vegetables to hanging baskets, annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs. We are also the #1 grower of organic hydroponic lettuce in the Pacific Northwest, recently completing construction on an additional 40,000 square foot greenhouse to expand our ability to grow quality food for our community. Across all of our operations, we proudly employ up to 120 dedicated full-time and seasonal workers and horticulturists.
